SBR: Sean Brynda Reserve
It's been three days since I have left the Summit. I had a wonderful time this summer and if I could do it all again I would. My last week there was perhaps the best week.
In my last week of work as a base camp staff member, all we did was take away fire pits and take down a few more tents. We then spent a lot of time moving and rearranging stuff in the Pigott storage room, where it was turned into a dining hall for the rest of the High Adventure treks coming through the Summit later in the summer and fall.
As for the rest of the week, I spent a good portion of my time hanging out with the rest of the Scout Camp Staff by paddle boarding, rock climbing, and setting up our version of a staff campfire. On the Friday before I left, everyone in Scout Camp, including myself, signup to go whitewater rafting down the New River Gorge (I'll be sure to post a video at the end). The rafting trip in and of itself was an experience I will never forget. I was in a raft filled with six other people and we went down into class five whitewater waves. It was dangerous and life threatening, but gave me another adrenaline high.
From making new friends, to having wild encounters with wildlife, racing my way up cliffs and jumping 30 feet into 100 feet of water, singing to old campfire songs with the Camp Director Phillip Ferrier at the guitar, this was perhaps one of the best summers I have ever had. Not only did my job keep me occupied, it taught me that some forms of work are fun and are meant to be fun. I promise myself, I will never caddie again in my life and I will always find a way to make the jobs I find myself in more fun than intended to be. I'm thank the people who read my blog and send me feedback. Your support gives me the encouragement to keep writing and I am enjoying every second of it. Be sure to catch up with my journey as I head off to my Freshman year of College at the University of Missouri- Columbia.
